1 May 2013 Leaving Kerala and the Zoo at Vandalur (Chennai)

Today we had to leave early enough to make it to Trivandrum airport well before our flight time. We set off at 7:30am and got there not long after 8am... due to a public holiday the roads were quite empty as was the airport. I entertained myself by reading a book on my kindle called "Henna for the brokenhearted" which is about an Aussie girl (Sharrell Cook) who 'finds herself' in India and subsequently marries an indian man. I read the chapter in which she discusses running a guest house in Varkala.... the same town I had just left. I was also nodding in agreement when she was describing an overnight journey on the train and a village called Manali at the foot of the Himalayas which we visited during our last trip.

Comfortable seats in the departure lounge

We flew IndiGo for the first time. This innovative young airline started in 2005 and has quickly made its mark in the indian air travel industry. I like their cheekiness; the air sickness bag for instance just says "get well soon", you can buy a travel bag that as the safety card features printed on the side; the way they have done away with classes and everyone "flies the same"; and the way they are coming up with ways to reduce plastic waste for instance by offering biscuits in reusable tins instead of disposable material.

Once we got to Chennai we located our driver. Just outside the airport he was stopped by traffic police and given a 100 rupee "warning" for having window tinting darker than acceptable... Apparently a fine would have cost 600 rupees. We marvelled about all this as the tinting wasn't very dark at all!!

We visited the Vandalur Zoo which basically involves a lot of walking and not a lot of animals. Also a scary ladies' toilet with what I can only describe as a row of doorless infloor lady urinals. Needless to say most of the ladies lined up to use the one usable squat toilet with a door.... There is half an hour gone that I will never get back...

Lunch at Daalchini's... people lined up and waited up to 15 minutes to be seated. Food was good, although the butter chicken ordered for the children was definitely not 'mild'...

At the zoo; not a lot to see (and the animals were not very accessible) and a lot of walking. It was very hot and it is the only time I got sunburnt. We only stayed about an hour before we retreated to our airconditioned taxi...

stayed the night at a serviced 3 bedroom apartment called the Qstay.
