The driver was a lot more relaxed today. Our first stop today was the stepwell at Adalaj. This place looks unsassuming from the outside. Inside it is an ornate masterpiece with intrecate carvings on the walls, pillars and even top stair treads. It is very cool inside. Considering the stepwell would have have been partially or totally submerged in its 500 year history it is in amazing condition.
We then went to Maniar Wonderland to allow Dave and the 3 eldest some time in the snowdome. Steven and I bought an icecream and he happily played around a Sikh family from Bombay. No doubt he was reminded of Sanj and his family.
We drove some 80 km south in search of Lothal, a 5000 year old village from the Harappan era. The museum houses many artifacts; tools, utensils, beads and toys. In the field we visited the ruins of the actual village; a dock made of many layers of bricks, a lower and upper village, a bead factory and cemetery. The bead factory had channels where water would have run through. The village had double brick walls and the tall walls seepage holes. The bricks used were perfectly uniform. I enjoyed making a connection with something from so long ago.
Two hours later we reached our night halt Vadodara (Baroda). We sent our driver on his way back home to Ahmedabad with a little extra cash for his family. Our hotel is opposite the train station from which we will catch a train tomorrow to Valsad.
