29 April 2013 - cruising the backwaters of Alleppey in a new houseboat

We spent several hours cruising the backwaters around Alleppey on a beautiful houseboat that is only 2 months old. My Dad would have loved the beautiful woodwork throughout. Today's outing was not cheap; to put it in perspective the cost of Rs6500 could put a child through Domenic's parents' school for 18 months or so; it was however a lovely relaxing time with a great crew and way too much food served for lunch....

this one (in front of us) still under construction

Canals;  Alleppey has been dubbed "Venice of the East", our Homestay's name "Venice Castle" attests to this. The canals reminded me of Amsterdam (the Netherlands)

At night we went to a place called Dreamers Cafe right on the beachfront. Apart from a downstairs inside restaurant there is the option of what one reviewer likened it to having "dinner in a tree house", reached via small wooden stairs. In the "treehouse" were other westerners there including a French/Spanish couple, a young couple from London who had worked in Bombay for several weeks and are now holidaying in Kerala and a single guy from London. The food was great.
