21 April 2013 Bombay - Dhobi Ghat, Waterfront, Hanging Gardens, Bollywood stars houses, Gateway of India

We set off at about 9:30am. We had a "full program" planned for the day. First stop was Dhobi Ghat, a huge open air laundry run entirely by men. We took photos from the bridge at Mahalaxmi train station overlooking Dhobi Ghat.

Then past Victoria terminus train station which being a Sunday looked fairly deserted. I would have loved to have seen the dabba (tiffin) walas at work however they do not work on weekends. These men, most of them illiterate, collect thousands of hot meals (in multi storey metal round containers called tiffins) from homes and deliver them hot and on time for lunch to business addresses all around Bombay, with an accuracy level of more than 99.9 percent!!

We stopped on Marine Drive and took some photos of the city skyline.

The driver said Chor Bazaar would not be open yet. Chowpatty beach was deserted so we skipped that as well.

We spent a short time looking around the Hanging Gardens on Malabar Hill.

From here we drove past the word's most expensive building and then over the excellent Bandra-Worli sealink bridge; the longest such bridge in India.
In Bandra we stopped at Mannat, home to Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan. Another star, Salman Khan, lives "around the corner" in a flat ..

We spent the afternoon at the apartment and looking at the "fruit and vege market" under and around the flyover bridge. I also managed to photograph a road-side "barber"..

The driver collected us at 7pm. We stopped at the Gateway of India where Dave took some photos. The driver then took us to Bade Miyan, however this was the restaurant and not the street stall we had wanted. As Steven was agitated and Simon naughty, I was keen to leave the restaurant and go in search of the street stall. We found it just around the corner. The service was quick and the food piping hot and delicious. We walked to nearby the Gareway and sat near where the horse and cart rides leave from. A young mother who sells hair decorations made of fresh flowers and her 6 month old son came and sat with us.
