27 April 2013 Kochi outing to Kodanad (elephants) and Athirappilly Falls (a lot of walking ....)

We left at 6:30am towards Kodanad where there is a small elephant sanctuary. At 8am some of the elephants are taken to the nearby river for an hour of soaking and scrubbing. One adult elephant happily lay on its side while getting scrubbed, the other adult elephant looked grumpy and a young elephant enjoyed diving and playing in the water.

We then drove to Athirappilly Falls. These would be spectacular in winter when the water levels are much higher. The walk to the falls was long and the hillside steep and slippery in places. Once we returned to the halfway mark we stopped for a drink. A monkey came up behind us and started climbing the seat so we quickly got up. In her haste Natasha had left the mango drink on the seat. That monkey unscrewed the lid and drank the remaining 500ml in record time

Whilst in Cochin we stayed at Riverside Heritage Homestay:  http://www.riversideheritage.com/index.html
